Counting Sleep

Counting Sleep

What’s your highest score in the game of sheep? I mean, what’s the highest number you have gotten to before falling asleep?
I know we have all been there. Throughout our lives most of us struggle with sleeping at one point or another. But how do we beat this?
Here are two simple hacks I have studied and found to be effective.

Your bedroom is a sacred space

This one has been the biggest one for me. I used to do everything in my bedroom space. Work on the computer, eat, drink, hang out, etc. But between yoga books, habit books, nutrition books, and even famous speakers talking about the importance of keeping the bedroom sacred- I decided to give it a try.

Making the bedroom only for

sleep and sex.

That’s right, no TV in bed. No dinners in bed. This space is specifically for sleep and sex. It is a sacred space that your body will come to recognize for those two things.

The less convoluted you make it, the better. As you form a habit of making the bedroom specifically about these things, your body will learn and pay attention. It will build the habit and understanding of what the bedroom space is for.

So, when you lay your head down at night, your mind will relax easier. Your body will melt deeper into relaxation. Your whole being will recognize the space as a space of sacred relaxation, and sleep will come easier.

No electronics

Yup, I said it.
I have had many people fight me on this one- but it makes such a huge difference! We are overstimulated every day by the amount of electronics around us. Whether we are on them or they’re just on around us, they effect us. The blue light and electromagnetic waves they are giving off are truly harmful to us, and we know this!

So why do we not do more to help ourselves? (So many reasons, though mainly convenience and addiction at this point.) What’s the first thing many of us do upon waking up? Or maybe worse, right before going to sleep? Heck- how many of us use our phones as our alarms and have them right beside our heads at night?!

We know this is bad, and yet we still do it. I urge you to challenge yourself, especially if you’re having trouble sleeping. For one week, place your phone on the opposite side of the room every night. And stay of any and all electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime. See what a difference this can make.

Okay insomniacs, you have your homework! And if any of you have gotten past 300 sheep before, let me know. 😉

Namaste, Jess
