Learning from the bad
Warning: what I am asking today is not easy.
Today, I am asking you to think about things that may be harder, or uncomfortable.
Why?
Because,
In my experience, it has been those moments where we really learned some of our biggest lessons. It was in those moments where things felt heavy, wrong, upsetting, not as we wanted them- it was there that we learned more deeply, and faster than we have before.
So…
What was one of the harder moments of your life? It need not be a death necessarily, but an uncomfortable situation. Something that forced you out of your shell, your comfort zone, and your mind.
For me, this was my India trip. I had high hopes when I went there. I was going to the Yoga homeland! The very birthplace (rishikesh) and a highly redeemed yoga school.
Yes, I had plenty of good experiences and met wonderful people. But a lot of that trip was very hard for me. Our philosophy teacher would talk about his sex life and bank account every day (not what you exactly expect from a yogic philosophy school in the homeland). And when we, the students, would complain? We were told we didn’t understand because we were westerners.
This is one simple story from a very complex time, to be sure. But it was a moment when I realized that we often learn more, and quicker, in bad situations than we do from the good.
When the Universe wants to drive home an idea, a lesson, it will come at you hard. Like a spider monkey. It will not relent until you tap out, saying “I get it, I get it!”
So, what lessons have you learned? Have you been paying attention?
Are there patterns in your life that make you unhappy? These unhealthy/hurtful situations that just keep appearing and you are not sure why it happens to you?
Well, let me help you out.
It’s because of a lesson you have not let yourself learn. Once you recognize the lesson in this pattern and your part in it, you can move forward from it.
So, take the time to think through your life and patterns. Take the time to learn the lessons its presenting you.
It may not be easy, but I promise it’s worth it.
